I seldom here complaints from elders complaining about how the world is becoming a 'cheaper' place. People are preferring quick and momentary means of entertainment which have little or no values. Entertainment has just become a way to pass time and has lost its capability of rejuvenating the soul.
Quite a notable example would be that of contemporary music. Decades back, music was a rhythmicway of expressing one's feelings and emotions. Many of these old songs were never forgotten and are still enjoyed by many of us today. But what do the songs of today have to offer? Today, many songs are becoming rhythm-and-beat-centered. They are meant only for the promotion of an upcoming film. Once the film is out of the theaters, so is the song out of the people's minds. Such songs are so short-lived because they lack the values which please the soul and not just the ear.
But what has led to this degradation of the art and entertainment. After a few thoughts and an analysis it occurred to me that this was a consequence of the human mind becoming impatient. Demanding more in less time is nothing but impatience. But then what triggered this impatience? This was a side effect of the developing technology. Technology has made our lives ever-easier. It has also made them faster too. We have pushed our technology to its absolute limit of efficiency to obtain maximum profit in minimum time. Our expectations of getting more in less time have, therefore, originated from this technology. These expectations were at first restricted to only technology, but they gradually moved on other aspects of life. Music was no exception. Who had the time to think about what values a song should portray? Who had the time to comprehend and enjoy them? Instead the beat caught the shallow minds' attention.
Though art and entertainment is dominated with such 'cheap' works, we have not forgotten our preference for higher, meaningful art. In a school of grey fish, the white one is clearly distinguished. Every once in a while, a masterpiece does turn up. Though they may have become rare, we haven't yet forgotten the look of one. As long as the significance of technology does not surpass that of our emotions, art and entertainment capable of rejuvenating the soul will never cease to exist.
